We live in a marvelous, colorful, beautiful, yet polluted world. People often don't notice the waste all around us. We just stop "seeing" it. Our oceans and other waterways are particularly affected. Sea creatures ingest junk and often fall ill or die. One of the many avoidable forms of pollution is junk mail. Junk Mail Fish spotlights this waste by offering fish-shaped collages covered with bits of ads, stamps, catalogs and other unwanted mail. Do we really need to stuff people's mailboxes with junk?
Artists have unique opportunities to translate problems into beauty and to alert the public to important issues. I find inspiration in unusual places. Although I abhor litter and trash, I often find them strangely beautiful. How much waste can the earth absorb? How can we reduce our footprint and still enjoy quality of life? What kind of planet are we leaving our children and grandchildren?
