I'm a high school English teacher from Chicago with an MFA in writing... not visual art. My father was a painter and so is my son, and my interest in visual art is as an acolyte learning the higher powers of all art. Writing and painting approach life from different angles—as much as you might want words to act as a sort of paint, they are fundamentally rational and representative. Sometimes, it seems words will explain no matter what. But visual art seems fundamentally evocative. The color, shapes, and patterns of this book are essentially doodles and speak with very little rational intrusion. Art may be the deepest sort of iconography, its meaning surfacing from somewhere unconscious.
