"Would you believe that all the gods that people have ever imagined are still with us today?"
Neil Gaiman, "American Gods"
This sketchbook contains illustrations of 13 goddesses from around the world. Rather than drawing 13 women, I illustrated the concepts, creatures and ideas they represented and were represented by in their cultures.
While working on this project, I came to think of all of them affectionately. Even (and maybe especially) the mean or scary ones, because in general they had a really good reason for being pissed off.
Like mortal men and women, some are happy and some are sad; some are lucky and others are not. Some lurk in the shadows or have been banished to the moon or stars. Some protect humans and maintain order while others create chaos and entropy. I tried to show a balance of positive and negative influences and to include as many cultures as possible.
I conducted all my research online and used Wikipedia quite a bit, so accuracy may vary and I took artistic liberty when some of the details were a little fuzzy. I don't think they mind.
