I first watched - and fell in love with - the film Pina in 2011. I wanted to somehow explore the topics portrayed in the film, and when the sketchbook project came along, I knew I needed to create a piece of visual art for each interpretive dance scene depicted.
Changing seasons in life, codependency, rejection, rape, being haunted by unchosen paths, gender, sensuality, objectification, bravery, consumerism, joy, loneliness, depression, community, yearning, the guilt of trying - and failing - to become heterosexual through religious rituals - all of these things and more are explored in this book. Many of these topics are deeply personal to me and much of my mind and heart was poured into this project over the course of many months.
While the book will fully make sense as a companion to the film, it can certainly be enjoyed on its own. It is my hope that it speaks to you.
