I like to explore with color. I work in both painting and drawing, and I often use dogs as my subjects. In my oil paintings, I create large colorful paintings of dogs and snakes, that deal with the idea of emotions, personality, and portraiture. In this sketchbook I was working with pens, and I wanted to use color to portray dogs that I had met at the animal shelter. My goal is to create portraits that do not just have a likeness to the dog, but that also represent the personality of the dog. This experience was really interesting, it was nice to create a sketchbook that had a consistent theme. I chose the wanderer theme, as the dogs wander into the shelters and into our lives. I think this sketchbook definitely reflects some of the larger concepts and themes that I explore with my paintings. I think I am motivated with the desire to make a difference and connect with other people. I volunteer at the animal shelter, which I think is part of the reason why I am interested in rescue dogs as a subject.
