When I discovered 'Ahhh! Monster!' was a theme choice for 2016 I knew immediately I wanted to explore the concept of the Leviathan. Although I have lived my entire life far from the sea my dreams are haunted by impenetrable depths of water and the creatures which might reside there. For as long as I can remember I have been both fascinated and perhaps a little terrified by the vastness of the ocean. While my sketchbooks are filled with a number of fantastic ocean beasts, these creatures never seem quite able to terrify. Always there is a melancholy in their eyes that elicits my sympathy. While our ancestors could not guess at what the dark waters of the ocean contained, we know now that there are no monsters. The only true monsters are the ones we see reflected back at us in the mirror. When it came time for me to start my project I made a decision to forgo the fantastic and instead take a different approach. Pared with ancient text describing the Leviathan I present rather simplistic, but realistic drawings of whales. It is my hope that viewers of these words will think a little about the practice of commercial whaling, a barbaric and cruel practice that continues to this day.
