I'm a writer and so when my artist brother and his artist wife sent me this sketchbook as a birthday present last year, I freaked out a little. I left it in the envelope for a long time and then, one day, while I was writing (or vaguely staring out the window, scanning Facebook, thinking about ordering shoes) I pulled it out and just started. I had these photos on my desk and I cut them up and pasted one into the book. I like rules, so I made a rule that I would only use materials that occurred naturally on my desk. I used pens from my desk jar, paper from my ever present yellow pads, bits of magazines. Filling my sketchbook in this way helped me get past the idea that I am not an "artist." I was just making something using whatever happened to fall in my path.
