I'm an artist living in Minneapolis, MN. For this sketchbook I was inspired by an old book called Magic Patents, which lists patents of theatrical stage illusions, mostly from the 1880-1920s with titles like Animated Artificial Limbs, Flying Bird Carrying a Person, Three-Headed Woman, Decapitation, Haunted Swing. I paint them as if they were on a tiny stage, sometimes with tiny heads looking up at the spectacle.
In my other work I paint portraits of bar patrons, wrestlers and bodybuilders, pinups and mugshots, Negro League baseball players, nightclub performers and Weegee street bystanders, sideshow freaks and circus performers, medical illustrations and anomalies. Lately I've been working on a series of gouache paintings of doll heads.
