In my work as an artist, personal subject matter is central and is well researched before a project begins. My aim then is to initiate a conversation with the subject and the viewer on the way we live our lives, our relationship with others and with the landscape and our environment.
This particular project for the sketchbook, is dealing with ideas centering around my ancestors as the starting point. As it progresses, it weaves itself into a narrative of images with drawing, painting, monoprints and 'cartoon-like' sketches, illustrating my own life color, events, history and breath.
By focusing on breath (or spirit) or that which keeps us animated, we are here with one thing in common, that is breath.
Breath and its control is used in many disciplines, from religion to meditation, to dancing and singing. I have used the image of the dancer and performer repeatedly, in my art over my artistic career. For me the human figure in motion whether in dance, as trapeze artist flying through space, the space in which my grand-children (our grand-children) dwell, I am searching for ways to visually communicate the delicate balance that is required by mankind to protect and treasure this wonderful world.
