I approached this project as a way of opening the door to my creative self far and wide. I tried very hard to let it become what it would become without over-thinking or controlling or planning. I find collage the easiest method for me to let go and just put something to paper, as what is available is in front of you (as opposed to in your head) and you simply have to find it. I am always surprised at what presents itself in the most random of places. A large portion of the material in this journal came from a 1950's Betty Crocker cookbook, along with vintage fiction, antique dictionaries, manuals on flying, robots, fishing, home maintenance, etc., which simply caught my eye at estate sales, thrift stores, and other second- hand sales. I find collaging helps me gather my thoughts and sparks ideas for further pursuing the topics that present themselves. I am a mother of three, having married just out of art school 13 years ago, currently getting "back in the saddle" of more serious art making. It has been a challenge, and the sketchbook project has been a hugely helpful kick in the tail to doing so. It has been fun and therapeutic as well.
