I wanted this book to be the experience of a woman of color - an other. For so many women and girls the chance to be accepted, themselves and normal si not given. We're bombarded with images of not us. How does a woman shape her way...find her way? How does a young girl?
I wanted this book to be a story. I used limited colors to signify breakthroughs and moments, to signify limitations. Though I draw in many different styles and my work approaches many different themes I felt this story was very important to tell.
I myself have my own confidence issues, and though they're not all the same as this story in this book, some of it is tied to having the permission to be a woman. And at the end of the day, my sister who has connected and is ready to write/draw her own path, let's grant ourselves the permission to be US.
Brought to you by an island girl who is making her own way.
