Hi! I'm Marq Mervin, a graphic designer, an animator, and I love to write music, draw characters, and tell stories. It wasn't until this project that I could finally verbalize why I'm an artist. I make art in order to express the myriad of thoughts and emotions that I'm afraid to talk about. Ranging from being self-conscious to processing loss, I explore many personal areas through song, character, or story.
This project is titled "Journey/Samsara". "Samsara" is the cycle of life and death in various religions, including Buddhism and Taoism. I chose "Journey/Samsara" because the project centers on my recent personal experiences of doubt, frustration, fear, faith, and redevelopment. Briefly, I began and ended a new job during the time of drawing this. It was a temporary position that could transition into a permanent position. For four months, I was in a "limbo" state as I waited on the employer's decision. So much uncertainty brought on stress and anxiety, but the perfect inspiration for the Sketchbook Project.
I chose the theme "In 10 Minutes" to challenge myself to tell each part of the story in 10 minutes. In addition, I started merging my musical interests with the drawing process. I shuffled my playlist and the song that started playing was the inspiration behind each page, respectively. This has been my first step on finding unison between my passion to draw and my love of music. The experience was both unnerving and therapeutic for me.
