I have drawn as long as I can remember - detailed drawings of real and imaginary objects, designs, stories and situations. Though I am a ceramicist by choice and practice, my studio habit was drastically reorganized by parenthood; like so many artist mothers I navigate between time alone in a dedicated studio space and moments stolen at night, in a carved-out nook at home. This sketchbook has been my first sustained project in a long time, affording me the chance to revisit/discover different ways of working that have not typically been part of my clay practice.
Inspired by one of my students last year, I am now making sketchbooks with all my classes and as a result of multiple demos, ended up with a collection of blank books which called to me to fill them with themed drawings. Serendipitously, I found out about the sketchbook project. My process was that I made a little storyboard of the pages, curated some images from those themed books and made jottings on others. I started with ideas for many pages and let the blank ones tell me what they wanted to be while I was working. It came out so much about parenting, which was never my intention, but as I end up taking my inspiration from my experiences big and small, and from random wandering thoughts, this is a reflection of where my head is now. www.caroline-holder.com
