In my work, the viewer encounters patterns that interact to form illusions of textural space. This intricacy of the grid and hidden images within the gridwork creates an environment to intrigue the viewer to observe the subtle nuances.
Watercolor patchwork is a unique process where I have redesigned works through manipulation of materials incorporating textural materials to enhance the surface quality. Patchwork is a traditional art form where the pieces of materials are worked into quilts or coverlets. In following this traditional art, I have coined the term “watercolor patchwork” to celebrate the legacy of the quilts and my love for watercolor media.
The idea of watercolor patchwork came from my interest in folk arts and quilting process. I have always had a special fascination with quilts because of my grandmother, Emma Swartz. She was an avid quilter and sewed patches every day until her death at age 95. Watercolor patchwork is a special tribute to her and my father, Ralph Swartz.
This series has continued over the past years in memory of both my grandmother and father. My father has always been an inspiration to me and my work as an artist. His gentle spirit and courageous fortitude lives on in my work.
I am an Associate Professor of Art Education at University of South Carolina Upstate for the past 15 years. Before going to work at Upstate, I was an art teacher/art coordinator of Spartanburg School District Six for 30 years. After retiring, I was elected to school board member of the Spartanburg School District Six and was recently elected to a 5th term of four years. At the completion of this 5th term, I will have been a school board member for over 20 years.
I recently discovered the Sketchbook Project by the Brooklyn Art Library. I wanted to challenge myself and my art education students to create a sketchbook. My sketchbook will hold mini quilts that I created over the past few months. These quilts reflect special memories of events and special thoughts about my life as an artist.
