Through photographs and drawings, I created a brief graphic narrative about adopting an old rescue dog advertised as FREE in the local newspaper’s classified section. “Free Dog” is a quirky memoir about the special bond Jake the dog and I form, solidified by taking him back to the familiar memories of his original human owner who died. It’s a sweet journey about taking a chance on the end of many lives, as you will see if you read it. I intend to expand “Free Dog” into an extended, graphic novel and find a publisher for it. I love the modern, literary graphic novel scene happening today. My motivation is to tell a universal story about small moments in people’s lives that echo to form an intimate connection. Pen and ink, with splashes of watercolor or colored pencil, is my favorite aesthetic as a visual artist and writer.
