I started drawing every day a couple of years ago after joining the online drawing community and school Sketchbook Skool. In May 2016 I started a 99 day portrait drawing project because I was terrified of drawing people and thought this would help me get over that fear and I haven't really stopped. I still draw portraits most days thanks to the Sktchy app and if I don't draw a portrait I draw something else.
As for the Sketchbook Project, I took part several years ago but got a whole bunch people of people I was working with to join in because I was too scared to do it on my own (so we each filled a page of the book). So this is the first time I've done it all by myself - but thanks to to Sketchbook Skool and Sktchy I have so much more confidence as an artist now.
I chose the theme "people I wish I knew" because it fits with my love of portraiture but I thought that I could take a different approach. When I draw from Sktchy I'm usually drawing from peoples selfies. I decided for this book I would draw famous people (historic and contemporary) whom I would love to have conversations with, whom I would perhaps want to invite to a party. I created a pinterest board and filled it with photos of these people and quickly realised that they were my artistic, literary and political heroes. So that's what my book is - a collection of the people I would want to talk to about art, film, literature and politics.
