I graduated from Smith College as a theater major in 2012 and from the North Bennet Street School bookbinding program back in 2016. I've always had an affinity for not only book making, but paper marbling, paste paper making, embroidery, clay work, fine art and doodling- an eclectic mix of textures I've tried to bring into this book. Within, you'll find all sorts of paper I've made, you'll notice the book has been re-bound and there's all manner of interesting drawing techniques and writing within. Some of it works, some of it doesn't. That's ok. It doesn't have to always work. It won't always work. I'd say passion is the driving force of my work, but not in some ethereal, ungrounded sense. Passion to continue learning and studying technique, passion enough to overcome fear of failing and accepting that not every project turns out right at first. Passion to overcome a bad day and keep going and loving what I do. You'll see a lot of these overall themes for the project this year, textures, underwater, superhero ending, etc. in this book but ultimately I stuck with textures because I've worked with many. And so that's what you're holding. A collection of textures woven together from my life so far. One of the biggest concerns I hear from people hesitant to buy a book I've made is "oh it's too pretty I'll ruin it! You worked so hard on this and I have nothing to put in it!" You always have something to put in it. I consider a book a failure if it goes unwritten in or unread. So this book is for them. For you. I've lived in this book the way I hope everyone who has a journal, one I've made or not, lives in it. It's not perfect, it never will be. But it doesn't need to be and that's what makes it great. I overcame a lot to finish it, it's rough. I pushed myself and honestly, this was a victory just mail in. And I hope it inspires you to finish a book of your own. The title of this book is in reference to what Paulus Berensohn called the journal and journal making process, there's so much nourishment within the pages of a well lived in book. There are no mistakes, only variations.
