My starting point was “This is not what it seems” but has evolved into more of the “Connections” theme; Two concepts that are entwined because nothing/no one is ever what they appear to be. There are connections made every day whether we knew it or not. I believe people have “face” they show the world; one they show the people closest to them and then their hidden true self. The secret self, that only if people really knew me… well… they would be surprised; I believe seeks connections with something or someone that “sees” that hidden part of them. To be “seen” and understood brings a sense of being, satisfaction or peace within oneself; at least for a moment.
I took an old song I’ve always connected with and felt there was another layer of meaning to it. The song was not as it seems to be. I decided to illustrate the lyrics. With this sketchbook, I experimented with mixed media such as watercolor, ink, and collage. This time, I incorporated simple interactive elements. They engaged the viewer just enough to make a connection or discovery. The images are surreal in nature because the concept is symbolic and abstract. The full lyrics to Depeche Mode’s song, Stripped, can be found in the sketchbook. I take no credit for them and do encourage the viewer, if you are curious, to seek out and listen to the full song.
