I am Salvadorian-American residing in sunny Long Beach, California. My close proximity to the ocean is what drew me in to the "underwater" theme. Growing up in southern California, I have been fortunate to be able to spend a lot of my time by the beach and learning much about the sea. I have always loved sketching, watching movies and reading picture books, so I drew inspiration from all the fairy-tale and adventure stories I loved as a kid. I always like to imagine what it would be like to explore the vast and mysterious ocean so it was neat to be able to put my vision on paper. The sea life that I chose to draw, are ones that I’ve seen out while kayaking, at the aquarium or some that I studied while in a marine biology class that I took a couple years ago. I decided to add litter scattered all throughout some of the pages just because sadly, the reality is that there is a lot of waste being dumped in our seas and I felt it was important to touch on the subject. I wanted to present the beauty of the ocean and at the same time add every-day things that we use that end up in the ocean that are harmful to sea life. Loved adding the mermaid character and having her try and collect trash that she found along her travels. Having her return to land at the end was to hopefully have her become an advocate for the ocean and speak up and educate others about ways to prevent waste. Hope you enjoy checking out this little sketchbook as much as I enjoyed completing it.
