I am an artist and art teacher from Germantown, MD. When I created this book I invited people: friends, colleagues, mentors, doctors, students, etc. to write something on a page in the book. I then used the individual's statement (the shortest thing someone wrote was the word, "Let," and the longest was a story about how someone chose the way they do charitable giving) to inspire the page's design or illustration. This was an excellent experience for me because it gave me the opportunity to stretch and create using someone else's idea as a jumping off point. In a sketchbook I did in 2012, my father gave me a list of sentences about how to live life just before he passed away and I illustrated them. That was incredibly personal and deeply meaningful. This book is special because while there were profound ideas, there were also silly thoughts - or challenging ones. I was surprised by what people chose to write, and that motivated my thinking. I am driven by the chance to be creative and tell stories, often using lines and patterns.
