This sketchbook is made with layers of painting and photo montage. I use the notion of setting or living space which includes cityscapes, neighbourhoods, and interiors because I am profoundly affected by my own environment. In Michael Shapiro’s “A Sense of Place”, Author and Professor Frances Mayes writes “Southerners believe that place is fate, where you are is who you are.” I feel our personal and collective surroundings are participants in our own experiences. Whether using a figure, a window, or a map layered within a setting, I am suggesting that our environment can represent an experience and state of mind.
My recent work is born from continued explorations in opposition; inside/outside, private/public, home/away, and past/present/future.
"Relocation" is a continuation of these themes.
