The process for this sketchbook started out with the color scheme: blue and white. I had a few ideas for some images that included prayer flags and strings of lights, which lead to another idea, then another, then it sort of expanded into this juxtaposition of religious iconography. I was especially drawn to the contrast of the tragic and gory death of Christ, with the complete peacefulness of the meditating Buddha. Yet, both are images that I think are beautiful. I am usually attracted to aged things that have a patina, are timeless, and not necessarily specific to any particular period. But, for me, as an artist, the attraction of aesthetics is more of an inner sense that is not easy to define, nor is it universally shared. Interesting and beautiful is a powerful combination that resonates differently for each of us.
