As the leader of this Den od Cub Scouts, and someone who has enjoyed participating in visual arts all of my life, I thought it would be a fun exercise to create a group sketchbook as part of our Art Explosion elective.
I have long heard individuals say "I am not creative." I thought that this was only something that adults said after years of feeling that they were removed from their creative selves. I was shocked to heard this same phrase from 9 year olds. Especially those that are ambitious and talented when it comes to science and sports. It was sad for me that even as children we try to force ourselves into perfection, that we can't allow ourselves to build skills step by step.
So what I thought would be a fun way to display our youthful artworks wasn't really that fun for the scouts. They tried, but it was a try of obligation. Out of 7 scouts only 5 could even complete drawings to submit.
How sad. At age 9 they had already labeled themselves with what they could or couldn't do in life.
With this in mind, we present a sketchbook from the Webelo 1 Cub Scouts of Pack 8 in Madison, Wisconsin
