"Through images that combine drawing and painting, American artist Suzette Marie Martin explores how body language reveals the complexities, vulnerabilities and conflicts of intimate relationships."
For the past several years I've been focusing on series of paintings of sleeping couples. I create my large scale paintings through layers of charcoal and acrylic paint, building an accumulation of gestural marks, erasures, accidents, drips, as my preliminary sketch evolves. For this sketchbook, I switched out the standard paper for a canvas paper, and did each drawing "alla prima", without any preliminary sketches, using black ink and a sumi-e brush. It was a much more minimal approach than I usually follow! The small scale and unforgiving nature of ink forced me to focus on simple abstracted shape and line rather than the details of anatomy and layers of texture I usually build. I used to work as an illustrator (under a pen name) and did several children's books. This sketchbook project was a great way to tell a story without being concerned for clients or sales!
