There is so much love in this sketchbook, sent from home to home, from country to country, from hands to hands.
A group of friends with severe chronic illness made this sketchbook collaboratively.
And though most of us have never met in person due to the constraints of illness, we are very close.
This beloved physical object traveled to each of our homes for us to work in. From city to desert to town to mountains, along highways and airways and back roads and roundabouts.
Many of us can't leave our homes, or even our beds. So the sketchbook did the traveling for us, a small army of postal workers serving as our legs.
Each of us expressed ourselves in the sketchbook on the theme of "Connections," and then off the book went, by post, to another friend / patient / artist.
In the end, the sketchbook has been in all of our hands. For us, touching the sketchbook our friends have also touched is the closest we come to being able to "hug" each other.
We've loved and dreamed and worked together to make this piece of art.
It became an artistic passport exhibiting the stamps of our inner and outer worlds.
It was a truly magical book for us, growing more magical with each new stamp.
[The book shows a continuum of art skills from professional artists all the way across to people who hadn't dabbled in the arts since grade school.
And a continuum of illness to health is shown here as well, from people who can't hold up their own heads most days, to people who are able to work or volunteer a little each week.
This book is outsider art / community / art therapy / love and friendship.]
