For this sketchbook I used a combination of acrylic ground for pastel, watercolour pencils, inks and spray varnish.
There is an immediacy with the medium I used - a kind of drawing-painting but the works can also continue for weeks and months with the addition or deletion of marks and layers.
I have been working on this sketchbook over the past 6 months. During this time I have been living between London and New York. I have been working on large-format paintings and an essay for a philosophy book on the aesthetics of improvisation and a book cover for a book on S.T Coleridge's contemplative philosophy. I have been researching his romantic ideas on our 'lower' and 'higher' levels of understanding - from our physical senses to contemplative reasoning and looking at ways of illustrating these faculties via hemispheric domes or spheres with a deep sense of perspective.
Also in this book are portraits, musicians and places - experimenting with abstraction and figuration - inner and outer spaces.
