The older I get, the more I'm interested in the anonymous faces of past eras. In the old photos that I collect from flea markets and antique stores in France I see expressions and poses that hint at personal stories to which I can perfectly relate all these years later. They, too, felt passionate about things, longed for recognition and respect, hoped that they wouldn't be forgotten... And yet they ended up shuffled in photo piles, in cardboard boxes, on dusty shelves among other forgotten relics of past lives. When I saw the Sketchbook Project's theme of "Things I left behind", I thought it was the perfect occasion to connect some of them back to today; to re-discover some faces that had literally been left behind, as well as some who are remembered as part of my personal history.
