I was inspired by the term, "disconnection". My initial impression of the word was as having a negative implication. However, as I began work on my sketchbook, I embraced the term in a more neutral sense. Connection is very important in my life- connection with my self, people in my life, nature. As I worked through the book, I realized that to truly achieve connection in the way I need and want it, requires disconnection from the distractions, the noise, the unnecessary inputs that hinder one's ability to form unique thoughts, self-reflect and create pure connections of value.
I hope this sketchbook takes you on an adventure of both small and large connections. I want the viewer to smile, to feel a part of something and to see the imperfections. I chose small circles of tissue paper as the common thread, linking each page of the book. Along with the theme of (dis)connection, the tissue paper circles offered me an interesting challenge to build each page's content out of a single circle.
I had so much fun creating this sketchbook, and I hope that it is just as much fun to view as it was to create.
