My name is shanabeth, 25-years old, and I currently live in Seattle, WA.
This is my first sketchbook at the Brooklyn Art Library. I originally heard about all this from my mom, who purchased the book as a Christmas gift. I was definitely scared at the prospect of having a sketchbook that so many people could see when I rarely share that sort of thing with anybody, including my mom. But, with the support I received from my family and friends, I pushed myself to finish this (and just before the deadline, too!).
The way I approached this sketchbook was simple: I had a random idea and put it in the book, and then I just rolled with it. For this book, my first idea was I wanted to draw someone covered in spiders or with spides somewhere on them, which I put into the very center of my book. From there, I explored the ideas of fears and phobias and illustrated the ones I was most interested in or that I experienced personally. Some of them I tried to make more abstract, like fear of lost youth or running out of time or fear of imperfection, and others are more obvious: spiders, death, moths (that last one is for my sister).
There are pieces in here that I am incredibly happy with. The composition and style work together and work for me. And then there are others that I know could have been better. They're too simple or too similar to another piece. But that's life as an artist. I just have to learn and move on. And that's what this sketchbook help me realize. I finished it. This is the first big art project I've finished since high school. I'm mostly happy with it. And I don't mind showing it to other people.
