I was born in Puerto Rico the only artist in my family. I've been creating art since I was a toddler. I can't remember a day when I haven't thought how to bring an idea into fruition. From the perspective of an appreciative observer, the process is easy and effortless. From my personal experience, the process is at times anything but, even emotionally exhausting. There are times I want to shut down and not allow any more ideas inside my head.
I received my sketchbook as a Christmas gift. I thought it was harmless and cute. As I considered possible themes, one popped up right away. The project proved to be fun yet cathartic. Living the life of an artist means growing, experiencing, and discovering new forms of expression. Sometimes, facing so many choices and possibilities can easily derail the process. As I look back at my beginnings, I wonder why I abandoned photography. But it was easy to lose my way back then since I did not not have any encouragement. So I reverted to the medium most familiar to me. An artist's journey is never complete or resolved. Even my life as a painter slowly evolved into writing. For me it's now more challenging and fulfilling to create images with words. Painting was just too easy. Passion is a beautiful word but it's meaningless without the discipline and the struggle to find my true voice. I am glad my photography created a time-capsule for me of everything I loved and left behind. But now I am also happy that after many artistic incarnations, I finally can paint my reader's worlds with words.
