In the studio impulses to pick up a certain tube, tool, or brush chase the inevitable question: “What’s it all about?” Layering the charcoal and the paint---form, line and color, always inspired by recent experience--- builds the surface. Sifting through the layers with rags and brushes, solvents, water and pencils, answers continue to elude. Alchemy enters the picture as experiments with collage, textures, powders and pigments add to the process and to the mystery.
“Sense of place” is key. Place leaves an impact on us that cannot be denied. No matter what subject initiates the painting--nature, the figure, music, poetry---reflection and recall of place is what lingers for me. The viewer brings their own experience to complete the picture.
